Build A Backyard Chicken Coop

We live in a place that is at least twenty miles from the city. It is a suburb that has rows of houses, all with backyards.

This was what caught our attention when we drove through this enchanting place about ten years ago. The peace of this suburb was in sharp contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city that we had lived in all our lives.

Moving into this suburb was a decision that was not hard to make. We knew we could do a little bit of farming and poultry rearing, since we had the time and the space.

To build a backyard chicken coop was also on our agenda when we moved in.

Once we had settled and made sure that our windows were secure and that there was enough protection for us and for any guests who choose to visit us, we began to think of the poultry farming that we had always dream of.

It was quite a novel idea for people like us who had always been part of a city. Now with the plans to build a backyard chicken coop, we had quite a few things to think about.

For instance, we were wondering how we could secure these chickens and ensure that they were safe from the eyes of predators like the eagle or hawk or even the odd fox that could stray into our compound from the forest that was just ten miles from our backyard.

If you are a person who has grown up in a city, you might even think that we were out of our minds trying to live in a place that sounded and felt so dangerous.

In reality, it was not; we decided on making the effort to be one with nature and blend into suburban life as seamlessly as possible. When we had finally decided to build a backyard chicken coop we also finalized the right location for the same.

We wanted it to be in such a place so that we could always have an eye on it, from the house itself. There was no point in locating the coop in a place that was completely obscured from our line of vision.

We needed to think of a situation wherein we would have to look out and see if any predator had approached the coop in the night, right from the comfort of our bedroom or kitchen window.

Thus began our journey to build a backyard chicken coop with good quality materials.

We made all our purchases at the local hardware store and ensured that we had a person to guide us on the plans at every stage.

Since we wanted to do this entire exercise on our own, we also took the help of people who had written of their own experiences, on the net.
